GUIDED TOUR THROUGH THE LANDSCAPED GARDEN WITH SERPENTINE PATH AT COCHEM CASTLE (by the year 2010)
Louis Ravené had the castle rebuilt from 1868 to 1877 by Hermann Ende and Julius Raschdorff
in neo-Gothic style. At the same time a landscaped garden was laid out at the foot of the castle,
along a newly created path. Above the Moselle this path was blasted out of the cliff face using
dynamite and winds in serpentine style from the outer castle gate down to the outer castle tower.
Along this serpentine path you can enjoy a beautiful view across the Moselle countryside.
In the landscaped garden various trees and bushes were planted so that the grounds
would give the visitor an idealised vision of nature. Whilst creating the garden much
attention was paid to a contrasting combination of tones of green, fragrances and petal
colours of roses and lilac bushes, so that the park could be experienced with all the
senses. The path begins in Cochem at the Martin’s gate. Via several series of steps and
narrow stretches of paths you reach the castle along several serpentine tracks.
